Elizabeth Key Grinstead (birth 1630-1665) was one of the first women of African Ancestry in the North American English colonies to sue for her freedom from slavery and win. Elizabeth Key won her case and that of her infant son John Grinstead on July 21,1665 in the colony of Virginia. Many of her descendants later moved to Ohio Valley and the Midwest in the early 1800's to continue to live as free people of color. (wikipedia.org)
