We are seeking a highly qualified High School tutor, who possesses excellent writing skills across content areas and who is highly knowledgeable in Math and Science, to provide in-home tutoring support for our sons in the 6th and 9th grades.
Will vary week-by-week depending on homework load and need for support, as our older son is taking Advanced Algebra II and Biology and grasps some concepts more easily than others. However, we are interested in working with a tutor who could occasionally provide engaging STEM enrichment opportunities in addition to academic support. You can expect to meet with our sons (mostly one-on-one but occasionally with both) for approximately 6-12 hours of tutoring per week. We'd like to have support from 5:00pm-8:00pm Tuesdays and possibly Thursdays as well, depending on your availability. Weekend tutoring hours are on an as-needed basis and we can be flexible with scheduling for the right candidate.
We are primarily interested in working with someone who has a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math background and is highly skilled in this area. The ideal tutor emphasizes depth over breadth, sharing their expertise to clarify and extend what is being taught in the classroom in both practical and meaningful ways. We’d love to work with someone who encourages critical thinking skills, makes connections across content areas, relates subject material to the "real world" and finds opportunities to problem solve. We hope you can share your creativity and enthusiasm with our sons and that you might even enjoy collaborating on some projects together!
You should be kind, flexible, patient and able to explain complex concepts in a clear and engaging manner. Ideally, you will encourage independence, implement motivational strategies as-needed, assist with time management and work on strategies, like note-taking, to enhance retention of information and study skills.
-2+ teaching and/or tutoring experience with Middle School students and older
-Excellent writing skills
-Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, Engineering or a STEM-related field
-Graduate degree preferred
