a beautiful example of a near pristine condition antique medical device.
The apparatus, patented by Louis R. Davidson in 1933, is believed to be produced up until the mid-1940's by the J. Sklar Manufacturing Company. Based on the serial number, we believe it is an early example of the production device.
Our family is from the UK, with the last English-born generation in our family branch emigrating in the mid-20th century. With this history, we have a number of other vintage / antique medical apparatus' and point of care medical equipment from the UK that will get posted as well. Please inquire if interested.
From the Melnick Medical Musuem web page, regarding this apparatus:
"It was used to treat tuberculosis by causing an artificial pneumothorax (collapsing the lung by directly introducing air in the chest cavity). This treatment, originally developed in the 1890’s by Carlos Forlanini, was thought to heal the lung quickly by allowing the lung to rest. This modified version which replaced Forlanini’s device and became a well-known instrument, was used to treat tuberculosis until the BCG vaccine became popular in the mid 1940’s."
