I teach electric, acoustic and bass guitar lessons. I've played for 38 years now. I began teaching in 1990, working with over 2,000 students many of whom are now lifelong players. I grew up playing Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Queen, Simon & Garfunkel, Eagles, etc. etc. I've played everything from rock to country to classical to reggae.
The reality is that it's a real challenge to play a guitar well. It's a rollercoaster sometimes because one day it'll be going really well and the next you learn something new that, at first, feels like you'll never be able to get right. I have a program that every student goes through to guide them through the fundamentals of guitar playing. These fundamentals are awesome for learning to play well. Like golf, tennis and karate there are fundamentals that you simply have to know about before you can make any real progress.
That said, lessons are great fun. The goal is to play your favorite songs. Most students begin working on a song within 2 or 3 weeks. We continue to cycle back from songs to fundamentals and build up good guitar habits as we go. Students bring in the songs that they most want to learn and I make sure they play them right.
I graduated from Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California in 1990 and earned a BA Philosophy from the University of London in 2003.
I’m currently producing a bunch of my songs with legend Kenny Aronoff on drums. I've attended clinics and workshops with amazing musicians including Les Paul, Allan Holdsworth, Norman Brown, Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Paul Gilbert, Mike Stern, Joe Pass, Andy Summers, Hiram Bullock, Billy Sheehan, John Entwistle and Alan Parsons.
Playing music is a profoundly meaningful activity for a lot of people. It's so totally worth the time and effort for those who want to get there.
“Lance was my guitar teacher for over 8 years. He is the best of the best! Lance can play any style of music and caters his lessons towards your interests. More importantly, he teaches you how to learn on your own. Lessons with Lance provided me with the skills to evolve as a person - with and without a guitar in my hand. Highly recommended!”
“Lance was my guitar instructor for 5 years. I was brand new when I began, and Lance was extremely helpful and methodical with his teaching. He picked the first few songs I learned based on his decades of experience, and from then on, I could either choose my own songs to learn or pick a suggestion of his. I learned countless Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Aerosmith songs. I also learned a few songs in other genres as well. Lance is quite proficient in being able to teach a song from just listening to it, which allows him flexibility to teach you almost anything you’d like. Lance is also amazing at getting you to think about music and your life in ways that you may not have previously done. Lessons could be as theoretical or hands-on as I wished, and I learned a great bit about different ways to view the world from time I spent conversing with Lance. I absolutely recommend Lance to anyone for his professionalism, genuine attitude, skill, and flexibility.“
“Not only was Lance was my first guitar instructor, but after 20 years of playing guitar, I can honestly say he was the best teacher I've ever had. From the very first lessons, Lance focused on musicality and mastering the fundamentals and brought the best out of me by making learning fun and relevant to my musical interests. In my first few years of study, the ear training, music theory, and repertoire I learned, and the ability to transcribe and play by ear, are the the same skills that got me though music school, a masters degree at Berklee College of Music, and the role as a guitarist in the Navy Band. In fact, I used one of the songs I learned with Lance, ‘SRV,’ by Eric Johnson, in my Navy audition. Take lessons with Lance, you'll be happy you did.“
