Explore the Arai Tour-X5 Adventure Helmet
The Arai Tour-X5 is the new Adventure helmet from the Japanese quality brand Arai. It is the long-awaited successor to one of the best Adventure Helmets, the Arai Tour-X4. The Tour-X5 has been ECE22.06 tested and has been updated in different areas. It’s a versatile helmet targeting the touring and adventure rider who rides both on and off-road. Innovations have been made in the helmet shell, ventilation, visor and inner lining. It will compete against other high-end adventure helmets.
Tour X5 Helmet Shell
Arai Tour X-5 is made according the well-known Arai Glance-off strategy. The Japanese manufacturer makes its helmet shells as round as possible, with the idea that this provides the best protection. The idea behind it is that it’s better to glance off as much impact as possible rather than looking for ways to absorb the impact before it reaches the brain.
The Tour X5 is made of a fiberglass composite called Arai Super-Fiber Shell Construction. Arai claims this creates up to 40% more strength compared to standard fiberglass. They achieve this advantage through fine fibers and a unique resin.
The biggest advantage of fiberglass is that it’s particularly strong and this has the great advantage that less material is needed to reach the desired protection. As a result, fiberglass helmets tend to be lighter. The weight of the Arai Tour X-5 is approximately 1735 grams.
The Arai Tour X5 Adventure helmet comes in 5 sizes and 3 outer shell sizes. Three outer shell sizes is a very decent amount. This not only ensures that the helmet fits nicely around the head and is therefore safe, but thanks to its compact shape it also looks sleek and beautiful. What is also unique about Arai is that the EPS inner shell consists of 1 part with multi-densities. With other helmets these multi-densities are achieved by different layers in the shell, with Arai this is one and the same inner shell. This has the great advantage that the helmet offers excellent protection against different types of impact. The helmet has an intermediate-oval to long oval fit.
Inner Liner
The Arai Tour X5 Off-Road helmet feels extremely comfortable, like we see with other Arai Helmets. The soft inner lining is made of quality materials and consists of different parts. The updated cheek pads fit better on the jaw so that the helmet feels slightly less tight but still grippy around the face. The so-called “EcoPure” inner lining is antibacterial and made in such a way that it is optimized for the PH value of your skin.
You can personalize the inner lining thanks to the 5mm foam parts that are removable for an optimal fit. This way you can optimize the lining to your own unique head shape for a particularly comfortable riding experience. Furthermore, the lining is washable, but Arai recommends doing this by hand to maintain an optimal fit. The lining is completely removable.
The Tour X5 has an Emergency Quick Release Liner that ensures that emergency services can easily and safely remove the helmet in the case of a crash. There is enough space in the helmet to comfortably wear glasses.
Visor
The updated visor for the Arai Tour X5 is visibly different from that of its predecessor. The new 3D visor is now not only horizontally round (horizontal convexity) but also vertically round (vertical convexity). This was done to improve the functioning of the Pinlock 120 XLT lens included in the box. The new XLT (Extra Light Transmission) Pinlock has the best specifications and is the most resistant to condensation of the visor. With its predecessor it sometimes happened that the Pinlock lens was not completely airtight and therefore did not function optimally. This is something of the past with the new Tour X-5 Visor. The visor is also less pointy but has been given a rounder shape for a wide field of view.
The visor mechanism on the Tour X5 is of exceptional quality. This applies to almost all Arai helmets. The mechanism keeps the visor tightly closed against the shell. This makes the helmet quiet and windproof. The visor has different positions and can also be removed quite easily. The Peak can now be removed and then the 2 screws can be put back on to get it looking like standard full-face helmets. With its predecessor this was a bit more of a hassle because you also had to carry a spare part when removing the peak.
A bit of a downside is that the helmet does not have an integrated sun visor, but no Arai helmet has this so it will not be entirely surprising. The Japanese manufacturer is convinced that this detracts from the integrity of the shell and that’s why they strongly oppose the use of an integrated sun visor. The shell of the Tour X5 easily allows you to wear goggles instead of the visor. The updated nose guard has been made slightly flatter for a better connection to goggles.
Ventilation
The Tour X5 has an improved ventilation system. With adventure helmets in particular, it is important that the head stays cool during hot off-road days. The ventilation system has been optimized partly thanks to the new peak. This blows more air into the top ventilation and this allows more cool air to enter the shell. The helmet is equipped with air intakes on the forehead, a top ventilation and a chin ventilation. All air inlets can be opened or closed. The hot air is discharged through the exhaust under the spoiler, which can also be opened or closed. This has led to particularly good ventilation that keeps you focused, which is especially important for Off-Road helmets. It’s also equipped with a breath deflector to prevent condensation on the visor.
Versatility
The Tour X5 is actually 4 helmets in 1. You can wear the helmet in the following settings:
Adventure helmet with Peak and visor
Adventure helmet with Peak and goggles
Full-Face helmet (without peak) with visor
Street helmet with goggles
The last setting in particular lends itself well to riding a retro bike or scrambler type of bike. With its predecessor you needed a spare part. Now you only have to loosen the two screws and the peak and/or visor can be easily removed. A bit of a shame are the plastic screws that are easy to scratch. But Arai makes all the outside parts of plastic because the idea is that they should easily come off in the event of an incident. The helmet comes with a Double-D closure.
