I had an ISO tickets posting here on CL, and a guy contacted me with a screenshot of his Ticketmaster purchase and seat locations, so I thought it was legit. Address was Ford Avenue in Alexandria, cell was a 703 number. We texted, there were no obvious indicators he was a scammer (example: he spelled things correctly via text and email, showed me the actual ticket receipt and proof of purchase, etc.). He suggested we use Zelle for the payment exchange, since it's affiliated with both our banks (his a credit union, mine Suntrust). He claimed he is a videographer and his clients pay him this way. He was going to transfer via Ticketmaster upon payment.
And well, guess what...Zelle payment was made, no tickets were transferred, and dude has ghosted me via email, cell, text, etc. And Zelle, although affiliated with most major institutions, offers NO CONSUMER PROTECTION of any kind, against fraud or anything else. Unlike Paypal, Zelle is a simple transfer app and you think your bank will stand behind you because they're the ones endorsing it but they don't. Suntrust won't help me out, and the credit union he allegedly belongs to won't help either.
So word to the wise: Thomas Wilkins is a fraud. Zelle is not to be used for online payments to anyone you don't know personally; it's not like Paypal at all.
A public service announcement so you don't get screwed over like I just did. Merry Christmas.
